Ketogenic Diets

A ketogenic diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet designed to induce a state of ketosis in the body. During ketosis, the body shifts from using glucose as its primary fuel source to burning fat for energy. Here are key points about ketogenic diets:

  1. Macronutrient Composition:

    • A typical ketogenic diet is high in fats (approximately 70-75% of total daily calories), moderate in protein (20-25%), and very low in carbohydrates (5-10%).
  2. Carbohydrate Restriction:

    • Carbohydrate intake is limited to around 20-50 grams per day. This restriction aims to deplete the body’s glycogen stores, prompting it to enter ketosis.
  3. Fat as the Primary Energy Source:

    • In the absence of sufficient carbohydrates, the body breaks down fats into ketones, which become the primary source of energy for the brain and muscles.
